Description

Just one look at Chrétien and immediately it can be seen that it is different to all the usual craters one is used to seeing. Its interior is filled with dark lava deposits that have extruded into it after the crater formed, while the surrounding, neigbouring craters, Chrétien C to its north-east and an unnamed crater to its north, have the same similar lava deposits. The general region must at one time, therefore, been the recipient of a major upheaval of these deposits from the interior occurring around the same time. The crater of Chrétien itself, as far as one can discern it from its illusive apperance, has been totally altered by some event or other; ranging from the breached northern region now showing a non-existant rim, to the eastern sector that has been totally obliterated by another impact nearby (due to Chrétien S). Each area of the rim has experienced some dynamic, violent event or other nearby; leaving a paritally, hummocked interior floor exposed particularly at its western and south-eastern sectors. This lava floor-region has, subsequently, experienced minor impacts that are to be expected, however, one feature of the floor is that portions of it are more darkened than others (e.g in the north-central region that connects to the already-mentioned beached region) -- a suggestion that the main upheaval lava event occurred around here. - JohnMoore2
