AS17-M-2834 Widmannstätten is the relatively small crater in the upper right, overlain by the younger and larger Kiess (center). The even fresher 30-km crater in the lower left is Kästner S.

Nomenclature

  • Named for Aloys Joseph Beck Edler von Widmannstätten (1754-1849), a German physicist. (Spelling changed from Widmanstätten.)
  • This name appears on LTO-81B3 (for which it served as the chart title). It does not appear to replace any previous IAU-approved designation. Although it appears in the cumulative list of approved names printed in IAU Transactions XVB, when and how it came to be approved is not entirely clear from the IAU record. Biographical information was unofficially reported in Ashbrook, 1974. - JimMosher JimMosher
  • Widmannstätten and nearby Kiess were called the Wright brothers by NASA personnel (this during the hey-days of the Apollo program).
  • Erroneously printed as WIDMANSTATTEN (without the second N) on LAC 81 (page 163) in both the 2004 and 2012 editions of the Clementine Atlas of the Moon.- DannyCaes DannyCaes Jan 13, 2013
