Nomenclature

  • James Joseph; British mathematician (1814-1897).
  • Name given by Arthur and Whitaker in Rectified Lunar Atlas (1963) and approved by IAU in 1964 (Whitaker, 1999, p. 234).
  • The pronounced valley south of Sylvester and east of Froelich is unofficially called Vallis Sylvester by D. Caes. See LAC 9 in the Clementine Atlas (the upper right corner of LAC 9). Note that this valley is NOT Catena Sylvester!

Light on the permanently shadowed inner slopes and bulbous floor of Sylvester N (post number 979).
