- Sunrise at the Rimae Gutenberg / Capella region, captured in a series of orbital south-looking photographs made during the mission of Apollo 8. An interesting mosaic of these photographs (AS8-13-2228 to 2237) was created by David Woods and Frank O'Brien of the Apollo 8 Flight Journal (the caption "Montes Pyrenaeus" is an error, because these mountains are out of view, to the southeast of the depicted region).
- Apollo 11's oblique east-southeast looking orbital Hasselblad photograph AS11-42-6313 shows Rimae Gutenberg, with the curious "crossing" of the rima on the floor of crater Capella M. Research: Danny Caes

Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named after the nearby crater (Gutenberg).
  • Mary Blagg's Collated List of 1913 included one valley (Catalog entry 4322) and two rilles (Catalog entries 4323-4324) associated with Gutenberg (then called "Guttemberg").
  • The original IAU nomenclature of Named Lunar Formations (1935) listed the two rilles as Guttemberg Ir (Catalog entry 4323) and Guttemberg IIr (Catalog entry 4324). Guttemberg Ir started at the northwest wall of Goclenius and ran north to Gutenberg G. Guttemberg IIr started at a peak ("Delta") on the north-northwest wall of Gutenberg and ran to the south across the crater floor towards a distant peak ("Beta"), southwest of Gutenberg D.
  • The System of Lunar Craters completely re-numbered and re-assigned the rilles. The former Guttemberg Ir became part of Rima Goclenius II, and Guttemberg IIr seems to have been dropped except for the faint segment on the floor of Gutenberg, which became part of the new Rima Gutenberg I -- extending to the north instead of the south and including the former Capella IIIr. The names Rima Gutenberg II and III were assigned to parallel rilles (outside Gutenberg to the east of this (Rima Gutenberg II having been Capella IIr); and the names Rima Gutenberg IV and V were given to distant rilles to the west, closer to Censorinus. Rima Gutenberg IV was Capella Ir in Named Lunar Formations. Rima Gutenberg V seems to have been formerly unnamed. These assignments are illustrated on charts A5 and B5 of the SLC Quad Maps.
  • Rimae Gutenberg is not labeled on LAC 79, but some of the rilles are labeled on AIC-79A.
  • In 1976, the IAU adopted a resolution recommending that all rille numbers be replaced with "more meaningful names." As with all other then-numbered rille systems, the existence of the name Rimae Gutenberg was dutifully recorded in the IAU Planetary Gazetteer, but no attempt was made to specify the exact rilles denoted by the name.
