John Moore. Interpretation of the Goclenius rille numbers established in the System of Lunar Craters. The rilles lie midway between Mare Fecunditatis (top right) and Mare Nectaris (bottom left and out of picture). Rima Goclenius II is roughly 200 km in length, ending at the south-eastern rim of Goclenius - its floor being lower than the surrounding mare. Rima Goclenius I is also shown extending across the floor of Goclenius although such an extension has never been part of the IAU definition.

Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named after the nearby crater (Goclenius).
  • Mary Blagg's Collated List of 1913 included four rilles associated with Goclenius (Catalog entries 4331-4334), two of which were associate with Gutenberg by Beer and Mädler.
  • The original IAU nomenclature of Named Lunar Formations (1935) listed two rilles, Goclenius Ir (Catalog entry 4331) and Goclenius IIr (Catalog entry 4332). Goclenius Ir is described as running from the north-northwest wall of Goclenius to a point south of Lubbock. Goclenius IIr was confined entirely to the interior of Goclenius, corresponding the Psi on Neison's map.
  • The System of Lunar Craters largely re-numbered and re-assigned the Glocenius and Gutenberg rilles. It essentially retained NLFs Goclenius Ir as Rima Goclenius I, but combined Goclenius IIr with NLFs Guttemberg Ir to create a single continuous new Rima Goclenius II extending out of the crater into the surrounding plains, as shown in the image above.
  • In 1976, the IAU adopted a resolution recommending that all rille numbers be replaced with "more meaningful names." As with all other then-numbered rille systems, the existence of the name Rimae Goclenius was recorded in the IAU Planetary Gazetteer, but the exact rilles denoted by the name was not specified.
