Photographic Map

(This map is based on an Earth-based photograph that has been computer-corrected to zero libration. The vertical white lines indicate the left and right boundaries of the Rükl rectangle)

Nearside Named Features

  • Abel (was this crater once called Santacruz by H.P.Wilkins?).
  • Adams
  • Fraunhofer
  • Furnerius (Van Langren's Curtii or Ligni) (?) (E.A.Whitaker seems to be uncertain about these two names) (J.Hewelcke's Mons Nerossus).
  • Gum
  • Hamilton (called Kelvin by J.H.Franz).
  • Harlan
  • Headlights (a nickname from C.A.Wood for the high-albedo raycraters Furnerius A and Stevinus A) (see Additional Information below).
  • Hiten-Hagoromo (Hagoromo crash-landed on April 10, 1993, southeast of Stevinus) (34.3° South/ 55.6° East, according to Wikipedia).
  • Ibanez (a disallowed name from H.P.Wilkins for Marinus K).
  • Marinus
  • Mons Paropamisus (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the nimbi of Snellius A, Furnerius A, etc...).
  • Oken
  • Peirescius
  • Reichenbach
  • Rima Furnerius
  • Rimae Hase (see also Rukl Zone 59).
  • Santacruz (a disallowed name from H.P.Wilkins for a crater somewhere to the east of Furnerius, perhaps Abel?).
  • Stevinus (Van Langren's Segueri).
  • Terra Vigoris (Riccioli's discontinued name for the limb region northeast, east, and southeast of Furnerius) (see also Chart 60 for the strange Goris case).
  • Vallis Snellius

Farside Named Features

(The following features are not formally included in the present Rükl rectangle, but they are adjacent to it and their centers are less than 10° beyond the mean limb -- so they may be seen here in whole or in part with a favorable libration)

The Headlights

  • An interesting photograph of the Headlights (the high-albedo raycraters Furnerius A and Stevinus A) is included on page 20 of the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon by Charles A. Wood and Maurice J.S. Collins. - DannyCaes Aug 15, 2015
