Named Features

  • Agatharchides
  • Andreus Hills (informal name for the cluster of hills and hillocks between Gassendi and the Helmet, see the moonmap of Rand McNally) (called Gassendi Archipelago by the dedicated moon photographer B.Pilz) (Van Langren's Badvari and Cornaro).
  • Bibendum/ Michelin Man (two nicknames from C.A.Wood for a section of the Andreus Hills which looks like some sort of... Bibendum or Michelin Man).
  • Cassiotis regio (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the eastern border of Mare Humorum).
  • Clarkson (a disallowed name from H.P.Wilkins for Gassendi A, touching the northern rim of Gassendi) (see also OASI: Roland L.T. Clarkson, Trimley's moon man) (Van Langren called this crater S.Marci).
  • Doppelmayer
  • Doppelmayer pyroclastics (an informal name, incorporated on Chart FM3, page 82 in the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon (C.A. Wood/ M. Collins). This is the low-albedo region at the southwestern part of Mare Humorum).
  • Dorsa Herigonius H (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the system of wrinkle ridges running north-south across the bowl-shaped crater Herigonius H and west of the Helmet).
  • Dorsa Humorum/ Dorsa Kelvin (two unofficial names from D.Caes for the system of wrinkle ridges on the eastern part of Mare Humorum, near Promontorium Kelvin).
  • Dorsa Lubiniezky E (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the system of wrinkle ridges northwest and south of the almost incomplete crater Lubiniezky E).
  • Dorsum Doppelmayer J (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge north-northwest of the bowl-shaped crater Doppelmayer J, which is the southern one of the row of three craters at centre of Mare Humorum).
  • There's a curious irregular "mensa"-like elevation west of Doppelmayer J, which is the southern one of the three bowl-shaped craters in the central part of Mare Humorum (Doppelmayer J, K, L). One of the magnificent Hi-Res post-sunrise photographs of the Mare Humorum region made by Christian Viladrich shows that curious "mensa"-like elevation as some sort of shallow rimless depression (a veritable "trompe l'oeil" effect!). See Sunrise at the Gassendi part of Mare Humorum - Christian Viladrich and Sunrise at the Doppelmayer part of Mare Humorum - Christian Viladrich
  • Dorsum Gassendi (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge east-southeast of Gassendi, at the northern part of Mare Humorum).
  • Dorsum Puiseux D (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge running across the bowl-shaped crater Puiseux D at the eastern part of Mare Humorum, near Dorsa Kelvin) (see also the list of named wrinkle ridges in Mare Humorum, at the bottom of this page).
  • Gassendi (Van Langren's Annulus Neptuni, J.Hewelcke's Mons Cataractes).
  • Helmet, the (unofficial name, formerly in part Herigonius Eta and Pi) (the whole of it was once Van Langren's Contarini, and probably Riccioli's Morinus too) (the pronounced hillock at the northern part of the Helmet is also known as the head of the duck, thus nicknamed by H.Bondo).
  • Hippalus
  • Lobster/ Trilobite (two nicknames from A.Peck for a curious cluster of elongated hills northeast of Gassendi) (see: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Moon).
  • Loewy
  • Mare Humorum (Van Langren's Mare Venetum, J.Hewelcke's Sinus Sirbonis).
  • Mare Humorum's triplet (a nickname from D.Caes for the trio of craters at centre of Mare Humorum) (Doppelmayer J, K, and L) (the dedicated explorer of the moon A.Bozic from Slovenia discovered an alien face (a Pareidolia) on the chaotic floor of Doppelmayer K; the central crater of Mare Humorum's triplet) (see the LRO's close up photographs of Doppelmayer K) (see also the LROC article Dark Material Flows; about the region south of Doppelmayer J).
  • Mons Casius (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for Agatharchides P, called Novellas by H.P.Wilkins) (note: this is the second one of J.Hewelcke's Montes Casius, the first one is crater Vieta on Chart 51).
  • Oceanus Procellarum (Van Langren's Oceanus Philippicus) (the most southern part of it, at the upper right section of Chart 52).
  • Pearl ring (a nickname from J.Lacroux and Ch.Legrand for Gassendi) (probably the combination of Mare Humorum and Gassendi).
  • Pillars (Ch.Wood's nickname for the elongated hills northeast of Gassendi, of which the western one is also called the Lobster or the Trilobite by A.Peck).
  • Promontorium Kelvin
  • Puiseux
  • Rimae Gassendi
  • Rupes Kelvin
  • Unexpected remains of a possible basin (see this page).

Additional Information

The abundance of White Spots on the wrinkle ridges of Mare Humorum

To try to find your way on the floor of Mare Humorum is a tricky business, because none of the wrinkle ridges up here have names. Moonobserver Danny Caes decided to include some sort of unofficial nomenclature system (see list below).

Why an additional nomenclature system for wrinkle ridges in Mare Humorum?
The LROC's High-Res NAC close up photographs of Mare Humorum reveal curious chains of White Spots on the uppermost parts of its wrinkle ridges. Each one of these White Spots is composed of a large number of high-albedo boulders and rocks. These small compact fields of "white" boulders and rocks must be quite a strange experience for astronauts who want to explore these odd spots. Another peculiar fact of these boulder-rich fields is their sharp boundaries. An astronaut would cross a flat featureless low-albedo region to enter (abruptly) a "lunar wood" of high-albedo boulders and rocks! One could call these White Spots lunar labyrinths composed of irregular white walls! - DannyCaes Dec 6, 2015

Catalog of unofficially named wrinkle ridges in Mare Humorum

  • Dorsum Puiseux D: the pronounced wrinkle ridge at the eastern part of Mare Humorum, with crater Puiseux D about "halfway" on the ridge.
  • Puiseux D North: the northern part of Dorsum Puiseux D.
  • Puiseux D South: the southern (or southwestern) part of Dorsum Puiseux D (from Puiseux D to Puiseux G).
  • Gassendi Southeast: the pronounced wrinkle ridge from Gassendi to Gassendi O.
  • Gassendi Southwest: the curved wrinkle ridge southwest of Gassendi.
  • Dorsa Kelvin: the arc-shaped system of wrinkle ridges on the eastern part of Mare Humorum, near Promontorium Kelvin.
  • Dorsum Doppelmayer J: the wrinkle ridge north-northwest of Doppelmayer J at Mare Humorum's western part.
