A.J.M. Wanders: Op Ontdekking in het Maanland (1950)

(glossary entry)

Description

An interesting guidebook in the Dutch language, made by one of the most dedicated popularizers of lunar and planetary observing.
Should be re-printed and translated to English, French, German, Russian, etc... etc...

Additional Information

This book contains a curious map of the moon's near side in four quadrants (south up, north down). Curious because all the craters are khaki-green colored, while the mare regions are a soft light-green colored. Strange to say, Giovanni Baptista Riccioli's discontinued TERRA nomenclature was also included (these so-called Terra regions are colorless white), and there are also some of Johann Nepomuk Krieger's and Rudolf Konig's odd names at the Carpatus mountains. This map (the four quadrants) is a goldmine for those who want to investigate a diversity of discontinued lunar nomenclature.
See also the Exploration and Investigation of Riccioli's Terrae regions, with additional notes.

Several interesting drawings (between pages 352 and 353)
Plate XIX:
  • The Hortensius domes, by René Schlumberger.
  • Posidonius, by Philip Fauth.
  • Vallis Alpes, by Philip Fauth.
  • Messier and Messier A, by Jonann Nepomuk Krieger.

Plate XX:

  • Gruithuisen's so-called "Lunar City" near Schroter.
  • Curious canal-like features in Eratosthenes, observed by W.H.Pickering.
  • The so-called "snow halo" around Censorinus, observed by W.H.Pickering.

A.J.M.Wanders was perhaps the first one who discovered the existence of the lunar formation which is unofficially known as Gardner Megadome. He called it "f", see page 301, Figure 115. See also Quadrant II of the green-colored map at the end of the book.
