Additional Information

  • Lowest point of the Moon at -6.8 km on crater floor (in SPA basin). [Cook et al LPSC 33 (2002) 1281]
    • Note: both the SELENE/Kauya and LRO/LOLA laser topographic data now place the low point on the Moon at around 70.38°S/172.48°W -- a point on the floor of Antoniadi. - Jim Mosher
  • Crater counts yield mare ages of 3.44 and 3.50 b.y. Haruyama, J. and others, 2008.

Nomenclature

  • Named for Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (July 1, 1646 – November 14, 1716), a German polymath. He occupies an equally large place in both the history of philosophy and the history of mathematics. He invented calculus independently of Newton, and his notation is the one in general use since. He also discovered the binary system, foundation of virtually all modern computer architectures.
  • See also the unrelated Montes Leibnitz, a discontinued IAU name.
