Description

In Apollo Over the Moon (Figure 93 on page 100) the craters comprising Catena Pierre are described by G. W. Colton as being part of a larger, roughly circular belt of overlapping volcanic calderas. It is unclear if he regarded Akis as one of those volcanic pits, or as the remnants of an impact crater.

Nomenclature

  • Pierre is a generic French male name. Its use on the Moon is not meant to honor any person in particular.
  • According to NASA RP-1097, Catena Pierre is a Minor Feature whose name was originally intended only for use in connection with Topophotomap 39C2/S1(on which it is plotted). The labeling on the map is a bit vague as to which craters are included in Catena Pierre.
  • Catena Pierre was among 95 Topophotomap Minor Feature names approved by the IAU in 1976 (IAU Transactions XVIIB). From the 9 km dimension listed in the IAU Planetary Gazetteer, the name seems to be intended to apply mostly to the most prominent craters near the bottom of the circular arc.
  • It is totally outrageous that a line of three craters would justify the name of catena - a crater chain! This is an insult to the concept that named features are for legitimate landmarks. I can imagine that this name was bestowed simply to provide graphic balance to a bare map sheet. And look at Rosa - another named nothing!
