Named Features

  • Apollo 12 (LM Intrepid soft-landed on November 19, 1969, southeast of Lansberg, near the landing site of Surveyor 3) (First Look: Apollo 12 and Surveyor 3).
  • Apollo 12 ascent stage of LM Intrepid (impacted at 3.94° South/ 21.20° West, very near the bowl shaped crater Fra Mauro B).
  • Apollo 14 (LM Antares soft-landed on February 5, 1971, north of Fra Mauro).
  • Apollo 14 ascent stage of LM Antares (impacted at 3.42° South/ 19.67° West, some distance west of C.A.Wood's Turitella).
  • Apollo 14 S-IVB stage (the second one of the five S-IVB stages which impacted on the moon to show artificially created seismic waves. Apollo 14's S-IVB stage impacted east of Montes Riphaeus, on the western part of Mare Cognitum) (the ejectablanket around the minute impact craterlet of Apollo 14's SIVB stage is perhaps observable and photographable through powerful telescopes, during conditions of exceptionally good seeing) (the pinpoint coordinates of the 20 Meter diameter impact craterlet itself are: LAT -8.1812 / LON -26.0305, at maximum resolution in the LROC's Act-React Quick Map) (look for dark ejecta-rays which show lengths of something like one-and-a-half kilometer).
  • Bibendum/ Michelin Man (two nicknames from D.Caes for a human-like cluster of craterlets east of Lansberg) (this Bibendum was captured on Lunar Orbiter 1's 151-med near the frame's lower left corner, and also on 149-med near the frame's lower right corner) (it is also detectable on Chart 22 in the 21st Century Atlas of the Moon (C.A.Wood/ M.Collins) at location 5-G; about two diameters of Lansberg to the east of Lansberg itself, magnifying glass needed!).
  • Bonpland
  • Caput de Tornese (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the high-albedo point at Fra Mauro B).
  • Conrad (an unofficial name from D.Caes for one of the officially unnamed craterlets near the landingsite of Apollo 12, southeast of Lansberg) (Charles "Pete" Conrad, 1930-1999, Commander of Apollo 12).
  • Darney (Van Langren's Fournerii) (this crater is mentioned on the original printed version of Chart 42, at the lower margin) (see Chart 53).
  • Dorsa Darney (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridges northwest and east of Darney) (see Chart 53 for Darney itself).
  • Dorsum Bonpland H (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge north of Bonpland H in Mare Cognitum).
  • Dorsum Fra Mauro B (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge north of the bowl-shaped crater Fra Mauro B).
  • Dorsum Guettard
  • East of Euclides D ridge (a clumsy nickname from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge about halfway between Euclides D and Kuiper, in Mare Cognitum).
  • Euclides D (once known as Eppinger).
  • Fra Mauro
  • Fra Mauro Upsilon (hillock northwest of Fra Mauro) (see Chart 53 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Grimbergeri (Van Langren's disallowed name for Fra Mauro Sigma).
  • Insula Melos (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the southeastern border of Mare Cognitum).
  • Insula Zacynthus (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the high-albedo area east of Lansberg).
  • Insulae Echinades (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the high-albedo spots west of Fra Mauro A).
  • Insulae Strophades (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for Darney Chi, Lambda, Tau).
  • Iunctinus (Riccioli's disallowed name for Fra Mauro Sigma).
  • Jekaterinburg Damm (J.N.Krieger's disallowed name for the wrinkle ridge which runs northwest of Euclides D toward Montes Riphaeus).
  • Kuiper
  • Lansberg (Van Langren's Kintschotti, J.Hewelcke's Insula Malta).
  • Lansberg Beta (hill east-southeast of Lansberg).
  • Lansberg Eta (hill south-southeast of Lansberg).
  • Lansberg Sigma (hill east-southeast of Lansberg, much more eastward beyond Lansberg Beta) (for the hills Lansberg Beta, Eta, and Sigma, see Chart 53 in the Times Atlas of the Moon).
  • Lansberg Omega (?) (hill south-southwest of Lansberg, east of Lansberg B).
  • Luna 5 (?) (on Antonin Rukl's original printed version of his Chart 42, the location of the impact site of Luna 5 is depicted southeast of Lansberg (about one diameter of Lansberg to its southeast), but... Wikipedia shows totally different coordinates: Luna 5 impacted not at all near Lansberg!) (southwest of Copernicus, see Chart 31).
  • Lunar graveyard (a nickname from D.Caes for Chart 42, occupied by a large number of landing sites and craterlets from artificial impacts) (see also Additional Information below).
  • Mare Cognitum
  • Mare Insularum (the southern part of it, occupying the upper section of Chart 42).
  • Mickey Mouse (A.Peck's nickname for the trio Fra Mauro-Bonpland-Parry).
  • Mitchell (an unofficial name from D.Caes for one of the officially unnamed craterlets near the landingsite of Apollo 14, north of Fra Mauro) (Edgar Mitchell, 1930-2016, Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 14).
  • Moletius (Riccioli's disallowed name for Fra Mauro Lambda).
  • Mons Crathis (J.Hewelcke's name for Fra Mauro Kappa, Gamma, and Zeta).
  • Mons Moro (a low-albedo formation, looks very dark during Full Moon!) (once called Bonpland Psi on chart SLC E5) (System of Lunar Craters, 1966).
  • Montes Riphaeus (Van Langren's Parigi) (see Chart 41).
  • Origanus (Riccioli's disallowed name for Darney Tau and the bright spot Darney Chi).
  • Pierot (F.C.Lamech's disallowed name for the distinct bowl shaped crater Darney C at the lower margin of Chart 42, west-northwest of Darney itself).
  • Ranger 7 (impacted on July 31, 1964, east-southeast of Kuiper, northwest of Mons Moro, at the eastern part of Mare Cognitum).
  • Ranger 7 hills (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the couple of hills north of Ranger 7's impact site) (both hills were once called Bonpland Gamma and Bonpland Omega on chart SLC E5) (for an orbital close-up photograph of both hills see Fig. 69 in NASA SP 362 Apollo Over The Moon; a view from orbit).
  • Rima Albin / Rupes Albin (two unofficial names from B.Albin for a rille south of Lansberg, see LPOD 50 Years Uncertainty).
  • Rimae Opelt
  • Rimae Parry
  • Roosa (an unofficial name from D.Caes for one of the officially unnamed craterlets near the landingsite of Apollo 14, north of Fra Mauro) (Stuart Roosa, 1933-1994, Command Module Pilot of Apollo 14).
  • Salvador Dali's Bart Simpson (this is a rather curious unofficial "name" from D.Caes for the couple of bowl-shaped craters Fra Mauro A and Fra Mauro C (Bart Simpson's eyes), plus the system of officially unnamed hills south of Bart's eyes (Bart's surrealistic mouth and nose, northwest of the craterlet Bonpland L), and Bart's more-or-less geometrically shaped hair, east of the bowl-shaped crater Fra Mauro B) (of course, for those who can't think surrealistic, it needs truckloads of imagination to try to see something of Bart Simpson in this part of the moon!).
  • Shepard (an unofficial name from D.Caes for one of the officially unnamed craterlets near the landingsite of Apollo 14, north of Fra Mauro) (Alan Shepard, 1923-1998, Commander of Apollo 14).
  • Surveyor 3 (soft-landed on April 20, 1967, southeast of Lansberg).
  • Turitella (C.A.Wood's nickname for a curious turitella-shaped formation west of Apollo 14's landing site) (the angle of solar illumination should be favorable to see this turitella-shape) (which means it's a clair-obscur phenomenon and a pareidolia).

Lunar graveyard

  • This region (between Fra Mauro and Lansberg, north of Mare Cognitum) is mankind's lunar graveyard of impacted rocket boosters (Apollo's S-IVB stages) and impacted Ascent Stages (ASs) of the Lunar Excursion Modules (LEMs).- DannyCaes Nov 20, 2008
