Neison (1880): Report on the Present Condition of the Lunar Nomenclature

This article, appearing in the Journal of the Selenographical Society, details the differences between the nomenclature Neison used in his classic 1876 book The Moon and that in use by other observers of the day.

Additional Information

  • The footnote to the article's title line says it was "Ordered to be printed by the Committee appointed to prepare a standard Nomenclature for the formations on the lunar surface." It is unclear if the Committee referred to is a committee of the Selenographical Society, the British Association or some other organization.
  • The names in Neison, 1876 are compared to those advocated by the Lunar Committee of the British Association for the Advancement of Science as published in the observing guides of Webb and Proctor (1st and 2nd editions), and the names used by Schmidt, both in his publication of Lohrmann's sectional maps, and in Schmidt's own 1878 atlas.
  • The categories of differences include:
    • Names in the British Association list not found in Neison, 1876.
    • Names from Beer and Mädler not in Proctor. Note: these omissions result from Proctor arbitrarily truncating the more complete list in Webb at No. 400.
    • Name in Proctor not in Beer and Mädler. Note: this name, Mt. Argaeus, seems to have been added to Beer and Mädler's list by Webb (Cat. no. 58), where it appears (without explanation) in square brackets.
    • Names on Schmidt's edition of Lohrmann's maps that could replace less specific names in Neison, 1876.
    • Names on Schmidt's edition of Lohrmann's maps that conflict with names assigned in Neison, 1876.
    • Names on Schmidt's 1878 atlas that could replace less specific names in Neison, 1876.
    • Names on Schmidt's 1878 atlas that conflict with names assigned in Neison, 1876.
    • Names on Schmidt's 1878 atlas that conflict with names selected by the British Association.
