Nomenclature

  • Willebrord van Roijen Snell (Snellius) (1580 - October 30, 1626) was a Dutch astronomer, optician and mathematician most famous for the law of refraction now known as Snell's law.
  • According to Whitaker (pp. 215), this name was introduced on Riccioli's map, however Riccioli used this name to label the feature now known as Stevinus. At the same time, Riccioli used the name Stevinus to label the present feature. Whitaker does not explain precisely when the names were swapped to their current assignments. - Jim Mosher
  • Catena Snellius A (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the chain of depressions southwest of Snellius A). http://bit.ly/2DssKxl
