Schwarzschild is an easy to recognize basin because of the two craters Schwarzschild K ("Hedin") and Schwarzschild L on the southern parts of its floor and rim.

Schwarzschild

Additional Information

  • Listed only as a large crater in Table III of [/Hartmann%20and%20Wood%2C%201971 Hartmann and Wood, 1971], this feature was recognized as a basin with rings of 70 and 200 km diameter in Wood and Head (1976). It was also recognized as a basin in Lucchitta (1978).

Nomenclature

  • Named for Karl Schwarzschild (1873-1916), a German astronomer.
  • Danny Caes notes that Schwarzschild K (the large crater at the southern part of Schwarzschild's rim) was labeled [/Hedin Hedin] on Antonín Rükl's 1972 [/R%C3%BCkl Maps of lunar hemispheres]. [/Hedin Hedin] was one of six nearside names that were deemed sufficiently indistinct to merit deleting the nearside names and reusing the names on the farside ([/IAU%20Transactions%20XIVB IAU Transactions XIVB], 1970). However, subsequent to the October, 1970 printing of provisional [/DMA ACIC] maps illustrating the new IAU farside nomenclature, these six nearside names were reinstated ([/Menzel%2C%201971 Menzel, 1971]), so Rükl's use of the name [/Hedin Hedin] for the farside feature was incorrect (as he notes in the booklet accompanying his maps). - JimMosher JimMosher
