LO-IV-188M The IAU's Rimae Repsold includes at least the prominent rille extending from [/Repsold Repsold] to the center of [/Galvani Galvani]. Presumably it includes the other rilles on the floor of [/Repsold Repsold] (such as at the tip of the arrow on the right). Whether it includes the southward extension from the center of [/Galvani Galvani] is less clear. Other IAU-approved feature names in this medium resolution [/Lunar%20Orbiter Lunar Orbiter] view include: [/Volta Volta], [/Regnault Regnault], [/Stokes Stokes], and [/Langley Langley].

Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named from nearby crater. ([/Repsold Repsold])
  • Rimae Repsold was among a number of rima names "approved as assigned" by the IAU in 1985 [/IAU%20Transactions%20XIXB IAU Transactions XIXB]. The map on which the name was currently "assigned" is not specified. The position is given as 51N 80W, a value that was evidently revised at some later date to arrive at the position and diameter given in the title line above (taken from the on-line [/IAU%20Planetary%20Gazetteer IAU Planetary Gazetteer]). The map reference given there is the 1970 LMP-3, but the rimae shown in this region are not named on that map. - JimMosher JimMosher
