Photographic Map

(This map is based on an Earth-based photograph that has been computer-corrected to zero libration. The vertical white lines indicate the left and right boundaries of the Rükl rectangle)

Nearside Named Features

  • Cleostratus
  • Dorsa Oenopides R (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the system of wrinkle ridges south of the incomplete crater Oenopides R).
  • Dorsa Repsold C (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the system of wrinkle ridges east, southeast, and south of the incomplete crater Repsold C, of which the southeastern part of the rim of it, of Repsold C, is also a wrinkle ridge) (see also Chart 8).
  • Dorsum Harpalus E (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge running across Harpalus E in Sinus Roris).
  • Dorsum Markov F (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the wrinkle ridge running from the bowl-shaped crater Markov F northeast toward the incomplete crater Markov U).
  • Galvani
  • Isosceles Triangle (an unofficial name from D.Caes for a triangle shaped arrangement of three craterlets between Markov U and Harpalus E, see Additional Information below).
  • Langley
  • Markov
  • Markov Lambda, Markov Mu, Markov Tau, and Markov Phi (four domeshaped hills to the east of Markov, source: page 244 in Tony Dethier's Maanmonografieen).
  • Oenopides
  • Regio Hyperborea (J.Hewelcke's disallowed name for the northern limb region).
  • Regnault
  • Repsold
  • Rimae Repsold
  • Sinus Roris (Van Langren's Sinus Principis, J.Hewelcke's Sinus Hyperboreus).
  • Stokes
  • Terra Honoris (Van Langren's disallowed name for the northern limb region, north of Riccioli's Sinus Roris and Mare Frigoris).
  • Terra Siccitatis (Riccioli's discontinued name for the region north of Sinus Roris and Mare Frigoris).
  • Vallis Cleostratus (an unofficial name from D.Caes for the valley west-southwest of Cleostratus).
  • Volta (one of the many craters in this northwestern limb region which shows an abundance of rilles) (according to Charles Wood this sector is the largest area of rilles on the moon).
  • Xenophanes

Farside Named Features

(The following features are not formally included in the present Rükl rectangle, but they are adjacent to it and their centers are less than 10° beyond the mean limb -- so they may be seen here in whole or in part with a favorable libration)

Additional Information

The Isosceles Triangle

  • A triplet of small bowl-shaped craterlets, arranged like an isosceles triangle, is located at 52.31° North/ 53.96° West, in the SE quadrant of Rükl Sheet 1 between Markov U and Harpalus E. It is also noticeable on page 20 (LAC 10) of Ben Bussey's and Paul Spudis's Clementine Atlas of the Moon. The two largest craters are 3.0-3.3 km in diameter and their centers are separated by 5.4 km (a distance which is much foreshortened as seen from Earth). The crater to the north is 2.8 km in diameter and its center is separated from the centers of the other two by 6.6-6.9 km. Under suitable lighting conditions it is an interesting test-object for lunar observers who want to know if their telescope is of good quality. - DannyCaes Nov 9, 2008
