Additional Information

Depth data from Kurt Fisher database
  • Westfall, 2000: 0.5 km

Nomenclature

  • Named for Christian August Friedrich Peters (September 7, 1806–May 8, 1880), a German astronomer and longtime editor of the Astronomische Nachrichten.
  • The name Peters seems to first appear in a list of new lunar names proposed by John Lee and W. R. Birt published in MNRAS and slightly expanded in Astronomische Nachrichten.
    • In neither publication is the identity of the honoree explained. Another possibility might be the nearly contemporaneous Christian Heinrich Friedrich Peters (1813-1890), a prolific discoverer of minor planets, but since Birt and Lee named a nearby crater Moigno (in honor of the editor of another scientific journal) C. A. F. Peters seems more likely. - Jim Mosher
  • This feature is Catalog number 695 in Mary Blagg's Collated List, where the name Peters is noted as having been used in Neison, 1876, although both Julius Schmidt and Beer and Mädler called it Arnold d. Indeed, Schmidt used the name Peters (again without identifying who he was honoring) for a different feature, Catalog number 3961 (adopted by the IAU as Rosenberger D).
  • The name Peters for the current formation was adopted into the original IAU nomenclature of Named Lunar Formations.
