The 28th item in C.A.Wood's list of Concentric Craters (1978) is the one immediately west of the bowl-shaped crater La Condamine F (in Mare Frigoris). It is noticeable on the Hi-Res scan of Lunar Orbiter 4's photograph LOIV-152-h1. In this part of Mare Frigoris, near La Condamine F (between La Condamine and J.Herschel), a curious field of twisted arc-shapes is noticeable. Among these twisted arc-shapes, several Concentric Craters (and possible Concentric Craters) have been detected.

(IAU Directions) CONDAMINE.--A rhomboidal-shaped ring-plain, about 23 miles in diameter, N. of Maupertuis, with lofty walls, especially on the W., where they rise some 4,000 feet above the interior. There are three large depressions on the outer N.E. slope, and at least three minute craters on the crest of the wall just above. Though neither Neison nor Schmidt draw any detail thereon, there is a prominent ridge on the N. side of the floor, and a low circular hill on the S. On the S.W. four long ridges or spurs radiate from the wall, and on the N.W. are three remarkable square-shaped enclosures. On the edge of the Mare Frigoris, N.E. of Condamine, are many little craters with bright rims and a distinct short cleft, running parallel to the coast-line. The winding valleys in the region bordering the Sinus Iridum, and other curious details, render this portion of the moon's surface almost unique.

Additional Information

  • The shadows in LO-IV-152H indicate that the height of the east rim of the main crater varies from about 1100 m to a little over 1700. The smaller La Condamine D is much deeper – nearly 3500 m. - JimMosher
  • A section of the eastern wall was measured (using cast shadows and LTVT) and a profile generated. The depth of the crater varied between 1800m and ~800m. (Boint, "Profiles Of Features In The J. Herschel Crater, Fontenelle Crater, and La Condamine Crater Area", Selenology Today, Vol. 9. 1-12.)- fatastronomer
  • The exterior of the west rim of La Condamine B rises between 740m and 940m above the surrounding mare (Boint, "Profiles Of Features In The J. Herschel Crater, Fontenelle Crater, and La Condamine Crater Area", Selenology Today, Vol. 9. 1-12.).- fatastronomer
  • Immediately west of the bowl-shaped crater La Condamine F is a Concentric Crater.
  • Another Concentric Crater (or possible Concentric Crater) is La Condamine SA west of the bright ray-crater La Condamine S (noticeable near the right margin of LOIV-152-h1).- DannyCaes Nov 11, 2009
  • La Condamine and its satellite crater S are on the ALPO list of bright ray craters
  • Is this a floor-fractured crater, or is the interior roughness just due to ejecta from Iridum? - tychocrater Oct 21, 2007
  • The upper half of photograph LO IV-145-H3 shows a curious field of twisted bay- and arc-shapes (the remains of small craters) in the area of Mare Frigoris between La Condamine and J. Herschel . See also LAC 11 (page 22) in Ben Bussey's and Paul Spudis's Clementine Atlas of the Moon.- DannyCaes Nov 16, 2008
  • A location slightly north or northwest of La Condamine seems to be the centre of a basin which is unofficially known as U6, according to the nearside map in the page Lunar Basins List.
