LROC Thumbnail Browser

From The Moon
Jump to: navigation, search

Within mere days or so, this new (experimental) page should look very much like (read: should be) some sort of handy supplement-guide to the LROC site's impressive Thumbnail Browser

In this new page, an amateur-scientist (me) want to try to explore (and to understand) the bulk of the LROC's "M" photographs, because they are the photographs which show parts of the moon. The "E" photographs show parts of Earth. The "C" photographs are those which show just nothing (or some sort of fuzz or noise) and are (I hope I'm right) the LROC-team's tools to calibrate the cameras and the digital system of the LRO (say: to see if everything is A.OK). A number of these "C" photographs show parts of the moon, which means they could be used as "appendix of lunar photography" (are they some sort of test photographs?).
And then there's also the "S" photographs, but... what are they? Could it be that these "S" photographs show traces of stars? (photographs of space).
Note: each one of the mentioned "M"-photographs has an ID of 9 or 10 numbers, for example "NAC M1895627038". In the guide below, only the first four numbers of an "M"-photograph's ID are shown. Now you could see in which one of the categories our specimen ("NAC M1895627038") is anchored...
And what about the two extensions "L" and "R" at most of the IDs? (seems they mean "left" and "right").

(it's as if I'm some sort of Champollion, ready to decipher the lunar Rosetta stone, also known as the LROC Thumbnail Browser) (or... suppose I have never heard of LROC, read: very much as if it's something totally new to me and I want to try to understand the whole of it...).

WARNING: this is not all!

What you see above is just the start of something MUCH more fine-tuned! How this page will look like within a couple of weeks or months is (even for me) a big question. I'm only at the threshold of a grand exploration!
