JPL Horizons

(glossary entry)

Description

An ephemeris service provided by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. This is the definitive source of information about the Moon's location and orientation in space as viewed from any position in the solar system.

Additional Information

  • Horizons website
  • In addition to the lunar ephemeris, Horizons provides similar information for all major and many minor solar system bodies.

: if you need help learning to use the Horizons system, here is a downloadable text file explaining how to use the Horizons web interface to determine exactly what the Moon would have looked like to Galileo Galilei if he happened to be looking from his home in Italy on the evening of November 30, 1609. - Jim Mosher
  • Since the preceding document was prepared, a Tutorial has appeared on the Horizons website giving clearer details of how to use the ephemeris, including targeting specific features on the Moon.
