Three of Apollo 8's orbital Hasselblad photographs show the bay-shaped Helmert with its dark floor: AS08-12-2171, AS08-12-2172, and AS08-12-2173.
Apollo 16's orbital ITEK-panoramic frames AS16-P-4352 and AS16-P-4357 captured a southward oblique look at Helmert (very near the left margins of both frames).

Nomenclature

Friedrich Robert; German astronomer, geodesist (1843-1917).
  • This name appears on LTO-81B3. It does not appear to replace any previous IAU-approved designation. Although it is in the cumulative list of approved names printed in [/IAU%20Transactions%20XVB IAU Transactions XVB], when and how it came to be approved is not entirely clear from the IAU record. - JimMosher JimMosher
