Kovalevskaya

Additional Information

Nomenclature

  • Named for Sofya Vasilyevna Kovalevskaya (1850-1891); Russian mathematician.
  • Kovalevskaya was in the long list of farside names approved by the IAU in 1970 and published in Menzel, 1971.
  • In 1974, the name Kovalevskij, a variant spelling used by Kovalevskaya in most of her published papers, was erroneously adopted by the DMA as a replacement name for Timocharis B and used as the title for LTO-40B3, where it was listed as "approved by the IAU" for this new usage. The IAU appears never to have actually approved Kovalevskij as a replacement for Timocharis B.
  • Kovalevskaya Q, a "half crater" touching the southwestern part of Kovalevskaya's rim, is called Bobone on the Hallwag farside map, and also on the Reidel-Dordrecht farside map made by Antonin Rukl. The real Bobone (read: the Bobone of the IAU) is located southward of Kovalevskaya Q. - DannyCaes DannyCaes May 15, 2011
